Writing Squads:

18th May 2011

Some pupils in year 6 have been busy taking part in a writing squad on Saturday mornings.

Georgia, Josh and Georgia have met twice on a Saturday morning.

Here is Josh's report on Saturday's meeting:

I attended the writing squad last Saturday at Cwmbran library and we met a famous female poet named Kate Williams. At first Kate showed us different pictures of the ocean and the sea. Some of them had pictures of the sea when it was calm and some with a picture of the sea when it was a stormy day. Then Kate asked us to shout out some words that came into our heads when we saw the different pictures, for example: stormy pictures-Ferocious, stormy, unsettled etc and calm sea pictures-relaxing, clear etc Kate asked us to write down some of the words we had thought of on a piece of paper she had given us and then think of an object or an animal to go with it like ferocious-lion or relaxing-bath.

After that, Kate asked us to think of all the things under the sea for 30 seconds and then when we finished she asked us to tell her all the words that we had thought of so that she could write them down on a board next to the table. Then we all wrote a poem about the bottom of the sea and we used the words on the board to help us. After we finished our poems, we all stood in a line and read them out one by one to everyone else.

After we finished our poems, we had some squash and biscuits, then Kate showed us some more pictures but this time with sea monsters on them. Kate asked us again to shout out some words that describe the sea monsters like slimy or lurking. Kate wrote the words down on the next piece of paper on the board and asked us to write another poem about a sea monster and to use the words on the board. After we did the poems, it was time to go. Our mums and dads had come to pick us up and took us home!
